Preparing Your Home for Back-to-School

Every year, August seems to sneak up on us! One minute it's summer break and the next you're shopping for school supplies, filling out forms, and trying to get everyone back into a routine.

My kids started on Monday. Am I excited? Yes,

Am I overwhelmed? Yes.

So here is what I've done as a professional organizer.

Refresh Bedrooms:

Summer often brings an accumulation of toys, crafts, clothes, and treasures. Before the school year begins, take some time to reset their space.

Helpful Tips:

  • Donating clothes they've outgrown

  • Removing broken or unused toys

  • Rotating books and seasonal items

  • Giving everything a designated home

A tidy bedroom isn't about perfection, it's about creating a space that's easier to maintain during busy school weeks.

Create a homework space that works: Your homework station doesn't need to be elaborate. A small, organized area with good lighting and easy access to supplies can help children stay focused and build consistent study habits. Keep only the essentials nearby to minimize distractions and make cleanup quick and easy.

Take Inventory of School Supplies at Home:

Use what you have first... before buying more.

Gather any leftover supplies from last year. You may already have plenty of notebooks, folders, pencils, or art supplies tucked away in drawers.

Store everything together in one easy-to-access location so packing backpacks or replacing a missing pencil doesn't become a scavenger hunt.

Clean out last year's backpack: Empty every pocket and wipe them down. Check for anything that needs replacing before the first day of school. Once they're clean. you can pre-load a few everday essentials.

Simplify Your Morning Routine:

The smoother your mornings are, the less stressful the entire day feels.

Consider creating simple "launch zones" near the door where backpacks, shoes, lunch boxes, and water bottles live. Even small systems like these help eliminate the morning scramble and encourage kids to become more independent.

Remember, You Don't Have to Do It All at Once:

If these projects feel manageable, start with one room or one afternoon. Small steps really do add up.

And if life is especially busy this season, that's okay too. Sometimes having a professional organizer can help you reset your family's spaces, can save hours of frustration, and create systems that continue working long after the school year begins. Whether it's a playroom overhaul, organizing kids' bedrooms, or creating functional family spaces, we're always happy to step in when you need support. Our goal has always been to help families create homes that feel calmer, more functional, and easier to enjoy.

Here's to a smooth, organized, and successful school year!
